AN INTENSE ELECTION IN INDONESIA

A stiff fight for the presidential election in the young democracies of Indonesia will be determined tomorrow in the most heavily populated region in the country.

The former head of special forces, Prabowo Subianto and Jakarta Governor, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) are seen to have intense competition which make markets in Southeast Asia's largest economy is under pressure.

A total of 190 million voters Indonesia face significant choices, between Jokowi that - relatively less tested - and Prabowo, a nationalist figure who has military experience but overshadowed by allegations of misconduct.

OCBC Bank economist, Wellian Wiranto said the young democracy in Indonesia will be facing the challenges of maturity tomorrow when voters make their choice.

This Presidential election is the first time to experience the change of power from one democratically elected president to another figure, through the same process.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono - who claimed to disappoint many in the last four years - must step down in October after completing two terms in the seat.

Voting will begin in remote islands in eastern Indonesia and ended in the West is more densely populated. Initial count by monitoring agency can provide shade selection of the overall outcome this time.

In this intense election, the victory of Prabowo is expected to undermine the market because many claimed that he would introduce strict policy in the financial sector and agriculture. If it happened, many large-scale projects with debt burden will be launched.

The stock market and the rupiah dropped about four percent since mid May when Jokowi popularity began to decline.
